Panchavadhyam is originally a art  and its elaborate form in vogue presntly came into existence in the year of1930s. The word Panchavadyam, literally means, an orchestra of 5 instruments, is basically an art form that has evolved in South India. Of the 5 instruments, 4 -- (1) Maddalam, (2) Timila, (3)Idakka and (4)Ilathalam-- belongs to the drumming category, while the 5th one, Kombu. Kombu is a wind instrument. Panchavadyam is characterised by a pyramid, like rhythmic structure of music with a continually rising tempo coupled with a comparative reduce in the No. of beats in cycles.
